Pooping on Vacation Is Hard

Have you ever suffered from constipation on vacation? It’s not just you. The Atlantic notes that constipation while traveling is quite normal, and in order to solve this problem, you must first understand why it is happening.

There are a variety of reasons why people suffer from constipation while traveling. The Atlantic destroys some of the main reasons:

“Every time you leave your normal habitat, it upsets the balance of your gut microflora,” says Brooke Alpert, a registered dietitian based in New York. Sometimes this starts before you reach a new destination: for some people, the very fact of traveling from point A to point B can cause constipation. The movement stimulates the intestines, so prolonged sitting in an airplane or car can cause a blockage in the intestines; Ignoring the urge to go in the air or on the road can also make it harder when you finally sit down on the toilet.

Of course there is much more to it. The time difference is usually a problem for anyone on a strict bowel movement regimen, while stress and anxiety can cause some bowel discomfort. There is also the simple fact that most of us tend to eat fatty breads on vacation, which leads to all kinds of chaos when we eat in excess.

Since there is no one specific reason, relief comes in many different ways. Eating fermented foods and drinking more water may help. As you might expect, high fiber foods can also get life back in motion.
