Creativity Does Not Mean That You Are “bad at Business”

Every creative person struggles when it comes time to sell their skills. At best, it looks like a “sale”, and at worst, it seems that business is just a world that you will never understand. Neither one nor the other could be further from the truth.

As the design blog The Design Range explains, saying you’re “bad at business” is like saying you’re not creative just because you can’t draw. Creativity is more than painting. Creativity can manifest itself in writing, humor, photography, games, and a million other activities. Likewise, “business” is not just office clothes, dollar signs, and tax forms. Business is a skill like any other and you don’t have to do it all yourself.

So, you are no good at promoting yourself, so what? This is one of the smallest aspects of a designer’s job. If you will, you can use that as an excuse to write it off, but the truth is, it’s just one little thing. You don’t have to be a rock star with everything, so just put it aside for a moment and take a look at the next one on the list. Chances are, you can complete the vast majority of the tasks required for a successful creative business, and the few things that you cannot yet do are where the problem comes in.

Doing business is no easy task, but turning your creativity into work isn’t as scary as it sounds. Many creatives often turn down opportunities out of fear that they will not succeed in “business” as if it were a wild beast that cannot be tamed. In fact, turning your creativity into something that makes you money often just requires learning a couple of additional skills. Or, in the worst case, working with someone who compliments the skills you are lacking.
