How to Get Great Wine for Under $ 20 at Costco
Costco is a great place to get eight tubes of toothpaste, new tires for your car, or a whole meal of free samples, but it’s also a really fantastic place to buy wine.
In the passage, provided of Esquire , «Reverse wine snob” John Thorsen explains that Costco not only copes with the selection of high-quality products (for example, Champagne Veuve Clicquot!), But their margin is one of the lowest:
I find the 10-13% margin is similar for alcohol. Unsurprisingly, Costco is the largest wine retailer in the United States. I recently spoke to a local store manager and commented on how a local upscale restaurant advertised wine at $ 12 a glass and $ 46 a bottle. At the time, my local Costco was selling this wine for $ 9.99 a bottle. He stated that Costco had a 12 percent mark-up on the item, bringing their margins to just under 11 percent. This means that unless you are dealing with a special situation like buying / selling, you really won’t find wine much cheaper than Costco.
So next time you shop there for a giant bag of jerky or a tray of turntable sandwiches, buy the wine department and see what happens there. (Take some of the dinosaur chicken nuggets too, they are pretty tasty.)
