Don’t Turn Off Screens Until You’re Done With Your Morning Routine.

The first time you wake up in the morning, do you check your phone? If so, then you may be used to having your day hijacked before you start. Change this to be the last thing you check.

As business blog Entrepreneur points out, all too often for most of us we have to get out of bed, grab our phone and start checking notifications right away. The problem is that it gives the rest of the world a chance to push forward the priority change in the morning. You get a message to reply to or a story to read. If you make your phone the last thing you check, you have time to wake up, shower, have breakfast, meditate, exercise, or do something else before someone tells you what to do:

When you immediately dive into email, texting, and Facebook, you lose focus and your morning gives way to the wants and needs of other people. It is much more beneficial to use these precious first moments of the day to do something relaxing that sets a calm and positive tone for your day. Going directly to electronics has the opposite effect – it’s a crazy way to start your day. Exercise, meditation, or even bird watching from the window are all great ways to start the day.

What your morning routine will be is up to you, but the goal here is to do something tangible to yourself before responding online. Our devices have a nasty habit of distracting our attention, whether we like it or not. Give yourself a chance to fight in the morning.
