Add Your Own Message to the Windows 10 Login Screen With Your Contact Information

Adding contact information to the login or lock screen of your device is a good way to help your lost belongings get back to you. Here’s how to add a message with your details to the Windows 10 login screen.

As the Simple Help blog points out, these steps will also work on Windows 7 and 8. To add a message to the login screen, follow these steps:

  1. Find “regedit” in the start menu and launch it.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> Software> Microsoft> Windows> Current Version> Policies> System.
  3. In the right pane, double-click “legalnoticecaption”.
  4. In the “Data Values” field, enter a title for your notification (for example, “ATTENTION” or “IF LOST, PLEASE NOTE). Click OK.
  5. Double click “Legalnoticetext”.
  6. Enter a message containing your contact information, such as your name, email address, or phone number. If you are willing to provide a reward, mention that too. Click OK.

Once you’re done, you will need to restart your computer. Your notification will now appear every time you start your computer, before you can log in. It might be a minor annoyance, but if it helps someone get their lost laptop back, it’s worth it.
