Use Signs to Enforce House Rules With Young Children

Young children love rules and do well in structure, but they are not always easy to remember. One super simple trick can shape the habits in your kids that you want to have at an early age: hang signs in trouble spots in your home.

It’s like a timetable for a house or, in restaurants, a sign for employees to wash their hands – a constant, visible reminder that’s somehow ingrained.

Tip Mom shares this tip from a friend who hung an “Adults Only” sign on the fridge and freezer doors for her 3-year-old who loved to open them many times.

Some ideas: “Wash your hands” (in the bathroom), “Put your clothes in the laundry basket” (in the bedroom) and “Don’t touch!” (at the door of your office). If your child is not old enough to read, drawings may be enough.
