No matter how hard you try, sometimes you just can’t fall asleep when you want to. There are many tricks to help your brain travel to a sleepy city , but this scientifically based method may be one of the simplest.

Body temperature plays a large role in falling asleep. A high body temperature can make you feel more alert and therefore awake. When bedtime comes, your body tries to cool off before bed, but there are some things you can do to help it. That’s why this New York Magazine YouTube video suggests sticking your leg (or feet) out from under the cover to help your body release some heat. The soles of the feet are hairless and have special vascular structures that help regulate heat loss; making them an ideal candidate for regulating your body temperature. Some of you may already be doing it yourself (I am doing it), but now you know why it is so convenient. Sometimes, however, just using your feet is not enough to keep you cool, so you may need to get creative .
