How to Completely Uninstall OneDrive on Windows 10

OneDrive ships with Windows 10 and is turned on by default if you sign in with a Microsoft account. However, if you’re not using OneDrive and don’t want it to run in the background, you can jump over a few steps to disable it or get rid of it all over the place in Windows 10.

We showed you how to get rid of the OneDrive icon in File Explorer using a registry hack, but this does not remove OneDrive and will still show up elsewhere. While Microsoft doesn’t provide an easy way to uninstall OneDrive, you can disable it everywhere in Windows 10 or uninstall it manually.

Disabling OneDrive will prevent it from starting as well as remove it from File Explorer, and you can easily re-enable it later if you want. Unfortunately, Windows 10 Home users don’t have access to the Group Policy Editor, so they won’t have this option. But if you are using Pro or another version of Windows 10, go to Group Policy Editor (type “gpedit.msc” in the search box) and navigate to Local Computer Policy> Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> Windows Components> OneDrive. … Then turn on the “Prevent using OneDrive for storing files” option.

To completely uninstall OneDrive:

  1. Open a Command Prompt in administrator mode: right-click the Windows icon in the taskbar and select Command Prompt (administrator).
  2. Type taskkill /f /im OneDrive.exe to end any OneDrive processes and press Enter.
  3. Then type %SystemRoot%\System32\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall if you are using 32-bit Windows 10, or %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall if you are using 64-bit Windows 10 and press Enter. …

When you do, you won’t see a confirmation dialog or progress bar, but if you try to find OneDrive, the app will no longer be found. However, your OneDrive folder and files will still be available.

If you change your mind and want to reinstall OneDrive, go to the% SystemRoot% \ SysWOW64 \ folder in File Explorer and run OneDriveSetup.exe.
