Whether you’ve been working for your employer for a while or you’ve just been hired, it’s a good idea to regularly look in the job market for what else is out there. Career Pivot recommends preparing for a job change every 3 years.

Finding a job can take anywhere from 3 months to 2 years (or more), including all the time a company spends interviewing candidates and hiring. Generally, you should be prepared to change jobs every 3 years:

So how long does it take to find a job?

I tell my clients to plan for a minimum of 6 months to 2 years. If you are employed, it really depends on the amount of time you can devote to finding a job. If you are following my targeted job search strategy , you should plan to start your job search 18 months after you start a new job and schedule this search for 18 months. This means that you will be ready to change jobs every 3 years. This does not mean that you will change jobs every 3 years, BUT you will be ready for this.

With this strategy, you will have the flexibility to move to better opportunities or recover faster if you lose your job, but still have the flexibility to stay in your current job that you enjoy.
