Add Attachment Points to Any Vehicle With Simple Nylon Straps
If you’ve ever had the awkwardness of tying a mattress, kayak, or anything else to the roof of your car, you know what it feels like to wish you had a safe place to strap it to your car. Luckily, all you need are nylon straps and you can give your car, whatever the type, secure, easy-to-hide attachment points.
Andrew Morrow explains it all on his kayak fishing blog, YakAngler , but Hack A Day picked up the story and we share their enthusiasm for just how brilliant this trick is. They note:
Nearly all cars have multiple bolts at the top of the fender that attach to a semi-rigid or structural part of the car. [Andrew Morrow] used about 12 inches of nylon strap, drilled holes at both ends and attached them to the wing bolts. With the hood closed, he now has a convenient place to tie anything he carries around with him.
The best part about this method is that these straps, when in place, can be folded and hidden under the hood when not in use, then flipped over when you need to tie something. They’re easy to add (although one Hack a Day commenter rightly notes that a wing washer holding the nylon between metal would be a nice addition) no matter what car you have, and they’re always on hand when you need them – not one must remember to bring something special the next time you go to IKEA. As long as you keep them away from anything hot enough to melt the nylon, you’re in good shape.
