Try Lifestyle Changes for a Month to See If It Works for You.
Changing your life – whether it’s food, work or play – will always be difficult. If you’re going to try to form a new habit, try to stick with it for a month. You will have ample time to determine how the change suits your life.
As the personal finance blog Frugalwoods explains, when you strive to develop a new habit, getting it done within a week isn’t all that hard. Anyone can play sports for a week or not go to restaurants for a week. Likewise, if you strive to live a whole year with a new habit, you will be overwhelmed before you even start. A month is the perfect balance between practicality and a good idea of whether a new habit is right for you. Most importantly, if you can stick to a new habit for a month, you can probably stick with it for longer:
We’ve found that if we do something for a whole month, it’s actually quite easy to just keep doing it. There is something about a monthly time frame that seems very doable at first, but enough to really take root in the habit.
The week is too short and the year seems like an impossible eternity. I can’t tell you how many habits we changed / broke / created in one month of testing. And if you seriously hate the results after a month, go back and reconsider.
Of course, being consistent with lifestyle changes is always the hardest part , but giving yourself a month to start will make the change easier. You can also use this time to determine if you really want to live this way. Maybe you want to exercise more, but after a month you decide that going to the gym is not for you. There are very few habits you can stick to for a month without figuring out if you really enjoy living this way.
