Change the Finish of Your Recessed Lighting for a Cheaper Retrofit
When you’re ready to change the look of your recessed lighting, there is a cheaper and easier way to do it than replacing the entire fixture: just replace the cover.
Recessed luminaires have changed a bit since the 80s and 90s, and it is likely that your lighting manufacturer has updated a cover that can be easily replaced with an outdated and possibly yellowed finish.
First, turn off the breaker and light switch and remove the light bulb. Then remove the socket, which is often held in place with a wing nut. Once the socket has been removed, you can pull out the sheathing.
Find the manufacturer and model name in the metal case. This can help you when looking for a replacement skin. If the ID is not found, bring your old trim to a lighting store and try to match it to something you like.
