Find Out Why You Didn’t Get the Job With the Following Follow-up Questions

It’s a shame when you think you are the perfect candidate for the job and the interview went so well but you didn’t get the job . You could do a little bit of digging into who got the job, but a more direct way to find out what happened is to ask the employer directly.

Career expert Heather Human writes on LinkedIn that the key to getting feedback you can use is to politely ask specific questions about improving your skills:

For example, start by stating that although you are disappointed that you were not chosen, you are still very interested in the company and would like to be able to grow as a professional. Ask very specific questions based on your reflection, for example:

  • Is there anything specific that I can improve?
  • How can I speak more effectively in future interviews?
  • What have I done best?
  • Do you have any further suggestions for me?

Questions like this are much more likely to get an answer than a simple one: “Why didn’t I get a job?”

She also suggests sending a letter of thanks after quitting a job , which may help you consider future vacancies.
