Give the Kids a List of Things to Do Before They Earn Screen Time

If your kids are anything like mine, the first thing they want to do when they get home from school or wake up in the morning is to turn on something with the screen. Usually a Minecraft computer. Keep them productive and also limit screen time with a to-do list.

Ann Kirby-Payne writes on her Narrowback Slacker blog how she stopped arguing with her kids about screen time and household chores and taught them how to prioritize: the list.

This is a list of things they must do every single day before they can glue themselves to the net or chase zombies. These are simple, important things like doing your homework, reading for at least 25 minutes, doing something creative or active for 45 minutes, keeping your rooms tidy, and doing one task from your to-do list. (Here’s a list of things kids can do by age group .)

After all this, Kirby Payne’s kids get unlimited screen time. On school evenings, after all, it might be just half an hour, but kids are less likely to complain because they’ve earned their screen time.
