“Don’t Trust Anyone Under 500”

Advice will come to you from all directions as you progress through life. When in doubt about whose advice you should trust, take a look at advice that has stood the test of time.

We tend to believe that the older a person is, the wiser he is. In an open letter to 2015 alumni, Dale Davidson of the Ancient Wisdom Project suggests looking for the wisdom of the very ancients when in doubt:

Contemporary advice encourages us to achieve work-life balance. Ancient wisdom tells us to work hard to build life … the next time you’re looking for advice on how to proceed, you can turn to a theologian, prophet, philosopher, or saint before any modern blogger (except for me, of course). Don’t trust anyone under the age of 500.

A lot of modern tips can still be helpful, but the older they get, the longer it takes to test. While they may be ancient, words of wisdom from any time can have a dramatic impact on your well-being now. Whether you find peace and consolation in religious teachings, or gaining strength from the Stoics , you can bet that any advice that’s been at least 500 years old is probably worth listening to.
