Quickly Check App and Device Compatibility in Preparation for Windows 10

With the release of Windows 10 on July 29th , you’ll want to make sure your PC, apps, and various devices are working properly before backing up and updating. Fortunately, Microsoft has made this easier with the Get Windows 10 tool, which is included in all copies of Windows 7 and 8.

Upgrading your copy of Windows to 10 should be smooth, but you want to make sure beforehand that your installation is actually ready. This new Windows system tray icon lets you do more than just reserve a copy of Windows 10 for free. As Fatima Wahab of AddictiveTips notes, he can also check your entire system to make sure everything is ready for an update. It’s pretty simple to do this:

  1. Click the Get Windows 10 icon in the system tray at the lower right corner of your desktop.
  2. Click on the hamburger menu in the upper left corner.
  3. In the Get Updates section, select Check Your Computer.

If you are all set and ready for the update, when it arrives, you will receive a message that you are done. Otherwise, you will see a list of devices and applications that are not supported. Problems with a device may mean that the monitor will not display correctly at its highest resolution, or some speakers may not be able to play sound when updated. Apps that are listed as unsupported must be uninstalled before you start the update process. Of course, updating the driver or installing a hotfix can also fix these issues, so check again if you can find updates. You can read more about compatibility issues on the Microsoft website here .
