The Four-Star Method for Shared Success: Raise Your Standards Every Day

Most of us want to be successful and improve our life situation. We raise our standards, set goals, and sometimes achieve them. However, if you really want to go far, raising these standards is not enough. You have to keep bringing them up.

As Spartan retired four-star general Stanley McChrystal explains, Up! Podcasts, people, and organizations often tend to achieve a certain level of success, believe their old goals are what got them there, and stick to the same routine over and over again. In fact, striving for the same goals more often leads to the same result, rather than the best. To truly improve, you need to raise your standards every day:

Organizations can be very pleased with themselves. And they can get very complacent. And usually, if they reach a certain level of success … they start thinking, “If I stick to the same formula, I’ll be fine,” and people become very, very comfortable. So, I think it’s important for people to first understand that what brings you there won’t move you any further. The organization must decide every day that we literally have to set a new standard for ourselves.

How you raise your standards depends on your situation. You can almost always find something to improve in your life or work. The concept of giving up comfort is important. Success is not about finding the right daily routine to stick with for life. Success comes from constantly changing that routine until your life gets better.
