Lying to Children About Money Only Increases Their Anxiety.

Children usually feel financially stressed at home. By talking honestly with them and providing age-appropriate information, you can reduce their level of anxiety.

The biggest culprit I’m guilty of is telling a child, “No, we can’t afford it,” when he asks for a cheap toy in the store. These are poisonous words that can cause unnecessary anxiety. Instead, tell the child “No” along with an explanation that he can process. Something like, “No, we’re saving up for a big summer trip, remember?”

By associating “No” with something they can relate to, they will make it easier to process information and won’t worry about something else mom and dad can’t afford.
