Guide the Clueless Interviewer by Asking a Few Key Questions

Some managers are great interviewers … and some are worthless. If you come across the latter, you can get the job if you ask the interviewer the right questions.

If the interview seems too short or just not very good, ask a few key questions at the end. Ask the manager for some great suggestions to help save this embarrassing situation:

I asked, “What else can I tell you about me to help you figure out if this is right?” And if that still doesn’t get them to ask reasonable questions, I would add, “Tell me more about the role and what is most important to you in the person you hire.” And other things to help you both understand if this is right for you: “How will you measure this person’s success in six months?” etc.

You are bringing the conversation back to the appropriate qualification. These questions will also help the interviewer apply your skills in an open position. The interviewer may feel relieved that you are helping and you will succeed, which may lead to hiring.
