Huge Eat by Date Database Tells You When Food Is Really About to Expire

Expiry dates are usually misleading. Often it’s about quality, not safety . Eat By Date is a giant food database that gives you exact expiration dates as well as a lot of other useful information.

You can search or browse for products, and the site will tell you how long that product will last when unopened or stored in the refrigerator or freezer.

The site uses information from the USDA and the Food and Drug Administration, among other sources. It is similar in many ways to the previously mentioned StillTasty .

But Eat By Date comes with a detailed explanation and additional information on many foods. They will tell you how to tell if certain foods are bad and what happens when those foods go bad. They offer various storage tips and other interesting facts. For example, here’s their two cents on how to tell if peanut butter has gone bad:

A common trait of bad peanut butter is the texture change from soft and creamy to hard and dry. The color of the paste may also darken and the pleasant scent will disappear …

Natural oil separation is natural, especially in natural peanut butter, which does not contain additional fats as stabilizers. You can tell how long a jar of peanut butter was on the shelf by the amount of butter on top. This oil can be added back to the peanut butter if desired, but we prefer to pour most of it into the skillet and use it to fry something for dinner. As a result, the peanut butter is thicker and does not flow straight out of the sandwich. On the other hand, if the butter begins to separate from the processed peanut butter (Peter Pan, Jiffy, etc.), this indicates that the peanut butter will go bad soon.

This is a lot of useful information, but they also offer handy charts for quick information. Check it out at the link below.
