Target’s New Return Policy Looks Good on Paper, but Read the Fine Print

Target this week announced a new one-year return policy instead of 90 days. At first glance, this sounds awesome, but the small print is not as effective. Clearly, this is an attempt to strengthen their own brands and stay ahead of the competition. Here’s what you need to know.

First, only 32 exclusive Target brands are eligible for the new 1-year return policy. Some of the more popular names include Nate Burkus, Mossimo, Champion, and Circo. All items must be in new unopened condition to be eligible.

With the rise of in-house brands like Costco’s Kirkland and Simply Vera and Kohl’s Jennifer Lopez, Target is using a new return policy to bring attention to its offerings. Only time will tell if it works, but it definitely gives shoppers the impression that they stand behind the quality of their brands.

It’s also worth noting that all unopened items in the gift registry now have a one-year return policy instead of 90 days. The annual refund window starts on the date of the event specified in the registry.
