Get Out of Bed and Keep Your Hands Busy If You Wake up at Night

Waking up at night is a common problem and a form of insomnia . If you’re light asleep or you’ve been awakened by a nightmare, the video above from psychologist and night school writer Richard Wiseman offers two solutions.

The first is to simply write down any idea or thought that might wake you up and go back to sleep. The second option requires more effort: you have to get out of bed if you cannot sleep within fifteen minutes.

Do something relaxing for ten minutes – it’s not TV or computer related, but engages your body and brain (yes, I can’t wait for comments). The idea is to stop associating the bed with wakefulness and perhaps tire yourself a little so you can fall back asleep quickly.
