“You Must Be Bored.”

We hear over and over again that boredom is a must for creativity , and musician Dan Deacon really emphasizes this by quoting the aforementioned quote from an NPR interview.

The entire interview is worth reading, but the quote above comes up when Deacon talks about anxiety and stress:

I was a person motivated by stress; I would use the deadline as a motivator. I think a lot of people do this when they are like, “I’ll just wait until the last minute and this will light a fire underneath me, and I’ll do it.” And I just kept thinking, “Well, this is a terrible way of life. Why am I building a house and lighting a fire in the basement to see if I can finish the roof before it burns my entire house? “

I began to understand how important it is to truly relax, and to be bored in relaxation. You must be bored. If you are not bored, your mind will never wander, and if your mind never wanders, you will never get lost in thought and you will never find yourself thinking about things that you would not otherwise think about.
