Clean the Chimney Without Climbing on the Roof

Chimney maintenance is often overlooked, but your safety depends on a well-cleaned chimney. This DIY chimney cleaning kit will clean your chimney in no time.

Chimney fires are a real danger and can be easily prevented if the chimney is clean. Climbing up to the roof and cleaning the chimney is dangerous work, especially if you have a pitched roof with a chimney at the edge.

A better option is to “sweep” from the bottom up using a rotary chimney cleaning system. The Sooteater is a rotating chimney whip that removes accumulations of soot and creosote using small plastic lines (whips) attached to flexible rods that lead from the base of the chimney. The Sooteater is powered by a standard drill attached to the rods and can rotate in both directions.

You can purchase additional rods for taller chimneys, and HomeFixated recommends doing this slowly so as not to burn the drill or damage the interior of the chimney. You must wear a twilight mask when cleaning and protect the area around the fireplace from soot and dirt.
