Replace Your Worn Rug on Your Stairs With a Few Basic Tools
The staircase is a high traffic area, which means the carpet wears out faster than other areas. Replace the carpet on the stairs by following these steps (no pun intended).
Start by removing the old and worn carpet from the stairs, including the liner underneath. Check your ladder for structural damage and repair broken risers or steps.
Pre-cut the carpet to the width and length of the carpet needed to cover the stairs. Partitioning is fine, but don’t underestimate how much carpet you need.
Attach carpet to each rung with a hammer stapler . Hold the padding taut and pin it at the edges and in the middle to secure it to the ladder.
Check the condition of the existing carpet strips. These are wooden strips with sharp nails that hold onto the carpet. If they are in good condition and not damaged by water, they can be reused.
Install the rug for the steps, starting at the bottom step and going up.
Use the aptly named tool for stairs, to fill the lower part of the carpet below the first step, followed by a knee knife pull the rug across the stairs. After the carpet has tightened, a pneumatic stapler should be used to secure it in place. Repeat this process for each step and you will have a new carpeted staircase before you know it.
