Web Is Better by Creating a “hook”

Networking can help you advance your career, but it takes a little more than just a handshake. Here are three things you’ll need to get online.

In JC Carleson’s book Working as a Spy: Business Advice from a Former CIA Officer, Carleson explains that the hook is how spies manage to integrate into the network. A good hook has three main factors:

  1. A reason to meet once.
  2. Reason for connecting.
  3. A reason to keep dating.

The reason for the meeting is hanging the hook, connecting with them is when the fish takes the bait, and the reason for continuing the meeting is that the hook finds its place and stays there. If you focus on these three elements, your communication is guaranteed to propel you further than a quick “nice to meet you.”
