Send Yourself Notes With Chrome’s New Shared Clipboard

Chrome 79 adds a new “shared clipboard” option to the desktop and Android versions of the browser, and it’s a welcome feature. It’s now much easier to send notes, links, or reminders between your phone and computer – no more third-party apps or clunky Google Drive copies and pastes.

The shared clipboard works between the Android browser version and all desktop versions (Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS), but you’ll have to tinker a bit to get it set up. The shared clipboard exists in the stable version of the Chrome app for Android, but it is currently only available in Chrome Canary for your desktop, and you will need to enable this feature using the Chrome flag:

  1. Make sure you have installed the latest version of the Chrome app for Android.
  2. Install the latest build of Chrome Canary
  3. Sign in to the same Google account on your PC and Android devices.
  4. In Chrome Canary, type chrome: // flags in the address bar and press Enter.
  5. Use the search box to find the “clipboard”. Three check boxes should appear : Allow the recipient device to process the shared clipboard function, Allow the signal processing of the shared clipboard function, and Synchronize clipboard services.
  6. Set all three flags to Enabled using the dropdowns, then restart Chrome Canary.

You can now right-click the text you selected in the Chrome desktop browser to send it to your Android device. To go the other way, select the text and use the Android shared sheet to send it to your desktop or laptop.
