Why Not Throw a Snack and Drink Party This Holiday Season?
This is party season and it is helpful to have a theme, focus, or motive when planning a holiday gathering. I love almost any kind of party, but right now my favorite concept of parties is D&D, like “snacks and drinks”.
Dips are the perfect party food. They only require one dish – a spoon to pour the sauce onto the plate – since the feeding system (that is, the ladle) is edible in itself. Scooping food into your mouth is very effective, which keeps the conversation fluent. Drinks also help.
To plan a snack and drink party, all you have to do is contact your friends and ask them to come to you at a specific time with their favorite sauce and / or drink. If they choose dipping, make sure they bring an appropriate bucket; if they do choose a drink, make sure they bring enough to share with at least a few other guests. (A bottle of wine is fine, but 12 ounces of expensive beer is less useful.)
You don’t need to manage the menu too much, but it is recommended that you talk to people about their overall plan so that there are no 13 onion sauces. Although in reality a keg of beer and 13 onion sauces party would still be a good party. If you or your guests need inspiration, we have ideas here , but it’s best to aim for a mixture of hot and cold, heavy and light, and there are several vegan or vegetarian options. While cheeseballs are not technically a failure, I would let them, but in the end you are the host of your D&D party.
Wine and beer are always welcome as drinks, but an a la carte cocktail , a bowl of punch, or a bottle of amaro (for relaxation) all feel a little more special, festive and party-worthy. A gin and tonic bar with fruits, spices and several types of tonics adds interactivity and allows cocktails to be served without a bartender. Even with such a seemingly limited menu, there is plenty of room for creativity, both with drinks and snacks.
