Use an Ice Cube to Make a Perfectly Round Egg
My love of McMuffin and McMuffin style breakfast sandwiches is no secret. Delicate English muffins, salted meats, melted cheese and a perfectly round egg make for a wonderful breakfast. Making your own home is not too difficult, but a steamed round egg is critical.
You can use the cookie cutter and quickly jump to McMuffin , but if you prefer cooking on the stove (or just don’t own a microwave), an ice cube will come in handy surprisingly. As Jim Foreman (my new grandfather) explains in his adorable How To Make Round Eggs tutorial video, you need two things for the perfect McMuffin egg: a silicone ring (take the ones with a foldable handle) and an ice cube. The reason for the ring is obvious – it helps the egg to maintain its perfectly round shape during cooking (Jim found the rings from Mason jars are loose and sticky), but the ice cube is a truly shiny craft.
To get the whole egg neatly cooked, you need to steam it, which means you need to add moisture to the pan. Splashes of liquid water can work, but they can also splatter (wet the egg) or evaporate (if you don’t add enough water). A small ice cube is not only the perfect amount of water for steaming an egg, but its frozen state ensures it doesn’t evaporate right away in a hot skillet. It’s very elegant.
To make a round egg, apply a small cooking spray to the pan and pan, heat the pan to medium, then break the egg into the pan, crushing the yolk slightly. Add an ice cube, cover the skillet with a lid, and after about two minutes, you have a neatly steamed egg, perfectly round, ready for sandwiches.
