How to Help the Puerto Rico Earthquake Relief Efforts
On Tuesday, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Puerto Rico, causing a series of tremors that led to the demolition of houses and structures on the island; this quake occurred immediately after the magnitude 5.8 quake , which also struck the island early Monday morning.
According to CNN , many locals say the damage caused by the earthquakes is more severe than that caused by Hurricane Maria back in September 2017, from which the island is largely still recovering. As of Wednesday, roughly two-thirds of the island is without electricity (and many people are left without access to water). A series of earthquakes have declared a public health emergency on the island.
If you would like to help earthquake victims and provide general assistance, here are a few ways you can help:
- Direct Relief provides both mental health and medical care to earthquake victims, including the dispatch of emergency medical kits. To make a donation to help Puerto Rico, select “Puerto Rico Quakes” when you have the opportunity to make a donation.
- Americares has deployed a team of mental health experts to help displaced families in Puerto Rico. Donations may not be directed specifically towards these efforts, but may be directed towards any Americares purpose, including relief in connection with Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.
- Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen caters to those who need it in Puerto Rico right now . To donate, visit the organization’s website . Donations may not necessarily be for relief in Puerto Rico, but may be directed towards any other World Central Kitchen disaster relief activities.
- The nonprofit All Hands and Hearts volunteered for the damage caused by Hurricane Maria, which is likely to continue after the recent earthquakes. To donate to Puerto Rico volunteering, be sure to indicate when you fill out the online form that you would like to contribute to helping the Puerto Rico earthquake victims.
