You Don’t Need Resolution, You Need Priorities
The days of setting the resolution are the days of big dreams. You will have a good year, great January. You’ll finally get into this exercise habit, or write this book, or clean your house — all of this is possible if you decide what else you can get.
Everything you do takes time, mental energy, and usually money in one form or another. Every hour you spend at the gym is an hour when you aren’t writing your novel, cooking, or picking up unnecessary clutter. I believe in you; I believe that you can do anything. But I don’t believe that you will succeed .
So, before you take another step towards your new habit or ambitious goal, take a moment to decide that you are giving up priority in order to be able to write that new thing in. Maybe you’re going to read more books while watching less TV. Maybe you need to arrange with your partner to get the kids ready in the morning while you’re at the gym, but then you take bedtime while they get a free hour for their favorite project. It’s okay to get creative. You may even find that you can hold more than you thought.
It’s also okay to give up something temporarily. Maybe you will take a break from the gym to take time to clear out the clutter. The trick is to have a plan to get back into it. Perhaps you can swap out your daily gym workouts for home workouts twice a week, and suspend your membership for just one month. Then February came, and it was time for the gym again. It’s better to plan it out than to let it happen by accident and not have a plan for recovery.
