Use a Nearly Empty Jar of Peanut Butter to Make the Dipping Sauce
My boyfriend has a very peculiar habit of making (and is) peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in his sleep. It was a little unsettling at first, but I got used to it, especially since he started making me sandwiches to sleep in. All of this suggests that we digest peanut butter pretty quickly, and I recently opened my pantry and found not one, but two nearly empty JIF jars.
These banks are very valuable in my eyes. Due to the sticky, oily nature of peanut butter, the walls often stick. Even if there isn’t enough for a sandwich, enough for something . They make great ice cream jars , but if you want a flavorful flavor I have to suggest you use them to make peanut sauce.
It’s a very free process that depends on how much peanut butter is left in the jar, but it’s also pretty straightforward. You just need some kind of neutral oil, soy sauce, chili sauce (sriracha works great), lime and some kind of sweetener (I used a combination of mirin and simple syrup). You can also add fish sauce, sesame oil, pickled ginger brine, lemongrass, or anything else you have in the fridge that you think will work. These are the ratios I used, but I highly recommend that you tweak them to your liking for a personalized peanut sauce experience.
JIF Jar Empty Peanut Sauce
Ingredients:
- 1 can of nearly empty peanut butter
- 1-3 tablespoons of neutral oil
- 2 teaspoons mirin
- 1 teaspoon chili sauce (such as sriracha)
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1 / 4-1 / 2 lime
- 1/2 teaspoon plain syrup or other liquid sweetener
Add one tablespoon of oil to the jar, close the jar and shake vigorously. Open the jar and scrape off the sides with a long spoon to loosen and dissolve the peanut butter even further. If it still looks rather thick (like mostly peanut butter), add another tablespoon of oil and repeat the process.
Add mirin, chili sauce, soy sauce, and 1/4 lime juice. Close the jar, shake everything together, then open it, scrape the sides with a spoon and stir. Try it and add more lime or some simple syrup if you feel like it. You can also add some funky fish sauce or some sesame oil. Once your sauce is exactly what you want, pour it into a bowl and dip everything (satay, fries, spring rolls, cucumber) in it or use it as a salad dressing. Repeat the process as often as you find nearly empty peanut butter jars in your pantry, which I think happens a few times a month.
