How Much Should You Pay Your Nanny in 2020, Depending on Where You Live
Every year, UrbanSitter publishes the results of its study of over 25,000 families in the United States, which helps determine the average hourly childcare rate (across major cities). And every year the average hourly wage increases and parents cringe, but we have to admit that our nannies deserve it.
The national average hourly nanny rate in 2020 is $ 17.73 per hour per child; $ 20.30 an hour for two children; and $ 21.49 an hour for three children. That’s almost a dollar higher than the 2019 average of $ 16.75 an hour per child (and $ 19.26 for two).
Of course, prices will vary depending on where you live. San Francisco continues to be the most expensive city to hire a nanny, this year it costs $ 19.74 an hour per child. Las Vegas is the cheapest city for the second year in a row at just $ 10.95 an hour per child.
Unsurprisingly, UrbanSitter also found that 79% of parents cite childcare as one of their biggest family expenses. And while 69% believe that childcare workers should earn more than the minimum wage (we know how much work these children have!), 31% said that even so, they don’t know how they will afford it.
This year, for added fun (at least I suppose), UrbanSitter also asked parents under what circumstances they would NOT hire a nanny because of his or her political views. The parents said:
- Sitter Supports Opponent 2020 – 16%
- Sitter has a 2020 opposition candidate bumper sticker on her car – 20%
- The sitter arrives in the opponent’s clothes / hat – 40%.
- The sitter discusses politics with your children, trying to persuade or defame the candidate you support – 63%
- Nothing – everything is fair in elections and when looking after children – 34%
I don’t know, they all seem low to me, but to each his own.
Most importantly, when you find a nanny that you like, do your kids like and who is reliable? Treat them well and make sure you pay them at least the average for your area .
