Selection of the “Oscar” for Hair Love was especially painful, since it followed that, as a teenager from Texas Deandre Arnold was suspended from work and said that he could not go to the graduation ceremony at the high school – unless he podstriget his dreadlocks. Arnold said he has been growing dreadlocks since seventh grade as a tribute to his father’s Trinidadian heritage. After the incident attracted national attention, the producers of Hair Love invited Arnold to the Academy Awards .
Love in Hair , by Matthew A. Cherry , tells the “heartfelt story of an African American father who first learned how to style his daughter’s hair.” It’s less than seven minutes, but still enough to make you cry. Writer Christina Marfis of Scary Mommy says it well:
The truth is, there is still a lot of ignorance and racism in the US about black hairstyles (and school dress codes that sometimes target them unfairly), and films like The Love of Hair will help fight that. The short is absolutely touching, and its basic idea of love between a father and his daughter will resonate with viewers from a wide variety of families, no matter what their hair looks like.
The short film was released on August 14 ahead of Angry Birds Movie 2 . In the last year it has also been published picture book “Love the hair”, which is the best-selling New York Times.
