How to Attend a Recovery Meeting When You Are Out of Touch
Social distancing and closed spaces in many of your cities can make it difficult to attend a recovery meeting.
If your regular meeting is canceled, at an institution you can’t get to, or you’re just trying to keep yourself isolated right now, there are several online meeting groups you can attend instead to get support.
If you are aware of an online recovery community that is not mentioned here, please let us know in the comments.
Alcoholics Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous offers a fairly large number of online recovery groups . The online groups available range from Google Groups, where you can chat in text form, to video chat options that happen at a pre-set time, similar to a traditional meeting.
Just like in traditional gatherings, you can search for online groups that target specific groups of people. For example, groups for women or military personnel.
Al-Anon
Al-Anon offers meetings by phone as well as Skype, Facebook Messenger Discord, email and WhatsApp . On the site, you can sort the available appointments in your preferred language (it has appointments in English, Spanish and French), as well as by your choice of day and platform.
Adult children of alcoholics
“Adult Children of Alcoholics” offers meeting options both by phone and online . Options range from scheduled phone meetings and chats to chats that you can attend at any time.
Substance abuse and gambling
In The Rooms offers 130 weekly online meetings for people recovering from addiction and addiction-related problems. A community of over 500,000 people offers online groups dedicated to everything from alcohol and substance addiction to gambling. The site can also help you connect with other people who are also in the recovery process for support.
Eating disorders
The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Related Disorders offers a number of online support groups for people with eating disorders. Groups are available for those suffering or recovering from anorexia, bulimia, overeating, body dysmorphic disorder and more.
