Waffles – Your Way to the Best Meatloaf Sandwich
The meatloaf is probably my favorite bread. Obviously it’s good straight out of the oven, but I always like the meatloaf sandwich that I make the next day better. I have eaten cold meatloaf sandwiches, fried meatloaf and microwave cooked meatloaf, but waffle meatloaf sandwiches are my current obsession.
One of the benefits of heating food in a waffle iron is speed. By using direct, high heat on both sides of the food, you can warm up and get crispy much faster than in a skillet or oven. Another big benefit (obviously) is the small brown dimples of concentrated scent. When you reheat the meatloaf in this way, you create a grill effect by giving you a meatloaf sandwich with a burger flavor in your backyard.
Like all waffle recipes , it is very easy to follow. Set the waffle iron to a medium level and, as it warms up, place a slice of bread on one side of the waffle iron, rather than in the center, to minimize potential break lines. Press down gently , remembering that your waffle iron may not close completely. (Don’t force it, as you can break the waffle iron and that would be very sad.) Let the meatloaf cook until it’s hot and lightly browned, then carefully remove it from the waffle iron – chopsticks are good to get into the little grooves – and place it directly on top of a slice of bread or a slice of bread topped with a slice of American cheese. Sprinkle your meatloaf sandwich on pickles, onions, or whatever and enjoy a very cold soda. (I love the Diet Coke meatloaf sandwiches, but any drink with an invigorating bubble will do.)
