How to Change Your Tax Return Online
If you’ve ever had to amend your taxes, you know the process goes the old fashioned way: mailing out forms. But that will change completely later this summer when the IRS releases an electronic version of Form 1040X.
According to the agency yesterday, digitizing the process has been on file with the IRS for some time. The electronic form will allow the IRS to process modified declarations faster and prevent some errors that might appear on paper.
Please be aware that once the electronic version is available, you will only be able to submit amendments for 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR. In all other cases, you will need to go back to the paper version.
The electronic form will be available through tax software, so if you need to change a recent return, you will want to go back to the platform you originally filed through.
According to the IRS, about three million 1040X forms are filed annually. It is often used to correct a mistake , but you can also file a revised tax credit return that has been reinstated retroactively .
