Girls Who Code Annual Summer Program Available Online This Year
Every summer, Girls Who Code offers a Summer Immersion Program to help girls learn to apply computer science concepts to personal projects. While this is usually a seven-week in-person event, this year the program has been changed to a two-week one – and is now online rather than in person.
Girls and non-binary students in grades 10-12 can apply to participate in the program. During these two weeks, participants will work up to three hours a day in teacher-led training and small group work.
If you haven’t heard of the program before, this is a great way for girls interested in computer science not only to learn more about it, but also to forge connections with women in the industry that they can then use as resources. queue when they watch college programs or even look for work.
In the first week of the online program, participants will create a personal portfolio website and personalized Buzzfeed style quiz using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
“The focus is on building a sisterhood, community and sparking interest in CS by engaging girls in creative and expressive projects and activities,” the group’s website says. “Throughout the week, the class will conduct interactive mini-lessons that introduce or reinforce the concepts learned through the video tutorials. The girls will also be grouped into smaller groups or programming teams where they can collaborate and support each other on projects. ”
In the second week, the girls will work on one of two versions of the final personal project. Options include the game design track and the activism web design track. On each track, girls will be provided with a planning guide, design resources, and past SIPs and student projects for inspiration.
As with the traditional face-to-face version of the program, there will be three different tracks to keep the classes small so that everyone can get the attention they need:
Round 1: June 15 – 26
2nd round: July 6-17
Round 3: July 20 – 31
Also, as with traditional summer group programs, not everyone can take part. If you (assuming you are in grade 10-12) or your teenager would like to participate in the free program, you need to fill out this interest form. on the Girls Who Code website . Those accepted into the program will receive a proposal letter by email following the application process.
