Call Your Mayor About These Specific Police Reforms

Police department policies on the use of force can have a huge impact on the number of people they kill. Campaign Zero has identified eight of the most important policies cities can start to implement right now, and have created a tool so you can see where your city is for each.

The website is 8cantwait.org and its policy is:

  • De-escalation required
  • The continuum of the use of force
  • Prohibition of choke hold and choke hold
  • Warning requirement before firing
  • Restriction of shooting by a moving vehicle
  • Requires officers to exhaust all other means before firing.
  • Requires other officers to step in and report when their colleagues use excessive force
  • Requires reporting of all cases of use of force or threats to use force against civilians.

There is not only a diagram for comparing your city with others, for example:

… but you can also find your city and get an exchange graphic showing which of the eight policies your city still needs to adopt, as well as your mayor or sheriff’s phone number.

These rules are a good start, but they are not the only way to reduce police violence. For more information, contact your local organizations, especially those led by blacks, that are working to end police violence. But this is one place to start.
