How to Prevent a Dog From Escaping If Neighbors Are Throwing Fireworks

Our puppies survived the weekend of July 4th, but most likely another Independence Day didn’t stop your neighbors from putting on fireworks. We’ve shared tips for keeping your puppy calm during fireworks in the past, but no matter how much you plan ahead, your dog will ultimately need to take an outdoor break. And you might not be able to predict when these women will be in your area – and even if the official summer fireworks shows in your city have been canceled, that doesn’t mean your street will be quiet.

While you may try your best to keep your dog calm during the holiday, you need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario: your dog will get scared and run away. Even if you have a fenced yard, your puppy runs in circles as much as he wants, it is impossible to predict what the dog will do to get away from the sound of fireworks or other explosives. So you can’t be too careful (because obviously you love your dog).

It may be too late to microchip your dog before the fireworks start in earnest, but you can still take steps to make it easier to reunite with your dog if it somehow escapes your observation.

Make sure your dog’s collar is securely attached and contains information to contact you, either on a tag (make sure it is secure) or on the collar itself. Don’t have time to buy an unusual custom-made collar? No problem. If the collar is lighter in color, you can write your phone number on it with a permanent marker.

If your dog already has a microchip , make sure your contact information is up to date with the microchip service.

In a televised Instagram post , Korean K9 Rescue advised using a backup clip if you need to leave the house at a time when there is a high chance of fireworks going off. You can wear two collars on your dog, or use a collar and harness. If one of the latches or collars fails, you will still be tied to your dog.

Korean K9 Rescue also recommends taking a photo of your dog so you have a fresh one on hand, although let’s be honest – you probably have about 600 recent photos of your dog in your phone’s camera roll right now.
