What’s New on Netflix This Week of Aug 16, 2020

In terms of animation, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have earned an incredible amount of my goodwill. Partly cloudy with a chance of meatballs, which makes the Kid’s Concise Book look very strange. In the Lego movie, they managed to turn an idea that wasn’t really an idea (“Lego … is this … a movie?”) Into fun, soulful and brilliantly designed entertainment for all ages. And Spider-Man: Spider-Verse is not only the best Spider-Man movie, but one of the best superhero movies, period. But were they kind enough for me to watch their new “adult animated series” from Netflix? Hoops ( due out Aug.21 ), created by comedian Ben Hoffman, hopes to capitalize on the success of Big Mouth on another high-school drama with an incredibly foul-mouthed cast. This time around, there seems to be more focus on the sad failure of a teacher (voiced by Jake Johnson of The New Girl , who also played one of Spider-Man in Into the Spider-Verse ) who sees himself coaching basketball. The trailer showcases some of Lord / Miller’s energy that has also given an edge to the Jump Street movies, but doesn’t instill confidence in the hilarious panic joke about having a shower.
