You Can Still Download and Play Fortnite on Android
Yesterday, Google and Apple removed Fortnite from their app stores after Epic made changes to in-game payment methods . Epic is suing both companies in response, but Fortnite’s removal means you can no longer download the game from any app store.
Don’t worry though: Android players can reinstall Fortnite and continue playing (iOS users will have to wait for Epic and Apple to sort this out, though).
Note: In-app purchases do not currently work, but you can always use the Epic website if you need to buy something. All other functions work fine.
Download from Galaxy App Store
For Samsung owners, this is easiest as Fortnite is still available in the Galaxy app store. If the game is compatible with your device, you can install and play it without any problems. Make sure you’re signed in with the same Epic account so you can transfer your Battle Pass progress and any in-app purchases you’ve made.
Download the unpublished Android app from the Epic Games Store
Other Android owners will need to download the Epic Games Store app to their device and install the game from there.
Downloading apps with unpublished apps can be a risky process if you download from questionable websites, but you’ll be downloading everything directly from Epic’s official website. This is the safest way to download the game – do not download it from anywhere else as it is likely to be fake files that are infected with malware anyway.
Here’s how to download the Epic Games app:
- Go to Fortnite.com/android on your Android device and download the EpicGamesStore.APK file. You can also use this link on your desktop and then scan the QR code with your phone’s camera to start downloading.
- Wait for EpicGamesStore.APK to finish downloading, then click the download notification when it’s ready (if it appears), or find the .APK in your device’s Downloads folder and click to install.
- Confirm that you want to “install applications from unknown sources” if prompted, then follow the onscreen instructions.
- Open the Epic Games app.
- Tap the Fortnite banner , then tap Install. Wait for the games to load (this is a rather large file, so it may take a few minutes).
- When Fortnite is ready, launch the game, log into your Epic account and you’re done.
Android can be picky about which browsers are allowed to download .APK files by default, so if you can’t download the Epic Games Store app, try this workaround:
- Open your phone’s settings app.
- Go to the app settings menu and open your browser permissions. This will be different for different devices and Android versions, but for reference, my path to Pixel 3a XL is Settings> Apps & Notifications> See All Apps> [Browser App].
- If you have a search bar in your device’s settings, try looking for the browser app. In my case, I was looking for “Firefox Beta”.
- In the application settings, click ” Advanced”, then ” Install unknown applications.”
- Select the “Allow from this source” radio button .
- Your browser should now be able to download and install .APK files. Follow the instructions above to install Fortnite.
