Help Save USPS in One Call
In one of the most bizarre plot twists of 2020, the U.S. Postal Service is arguably being sabotaged for political purposes. The full story is complex, confusing, and almost certainly incomplete, but USA Today offers a pretty good summary here .
In short, changes in the internal policy of the postmaster general (who has serious conflicts of interest ) have resulted in an unprecedented slowdown in mail delivery . For example, people who rely on the USPS for basic necessities such as prescription drugs are suffering. And we have elections in November, during a pandemic. Voting in person will almost certainly be insecure, so mail-in voting will be important for many, if not all, Americans.
The president doesn’t like the idea (in general, Republicans benefit the most from suppressing voters ) and is withholding emergency funding from the USPS while spreading the lie that the mail-order vote is rigged .
Anyway. If you want to protect the USPS, there is a simple script on a Twitter account called Save the Post Office that you can use to call your Senators and Congressional Representatives. It looks like this:
Hi, I’m a member. My postcode is xxxxx. I’m calling b / c. The post office worries me. I am requesting an emergency stimulus fund, a Senate vote on the USPS Justice Act, and an investigation into Postmaster DeJoy and his new policies. I am concerned because this affects small businesses, seniors and veterans, and * will * affect our ability to safely vote in the upcoming elections. Thank you.
All normal rules for summoning your representatives apply . First of all, call your representatives, not some big name in the country. Here you can find your Senators and your House of Representatives .
Feel free to email or use the contact form if you feel uncomfortable calling . Phone calls take more time from employees and are useful for making human contact if you have a story to share, so they can potentially have more impact. But emails still count, and your ultimate goal is for a co-worker to tell their boss, “I’ve been hearing from tri-parties all day that X is really important to them.” So call or email if you have an opinion that needs to be heard.
