Get Help With Missing Coronavirus Relief Payments

As the country looks to a possible second test of stimulus , many Americans are still waiting for the first . Last week we looked at several ways to find the missing payment, but if you still have problems, there may be another option.

Taxpayer Advocates , an independent organization within the IRS, will soon be able to help. According to a recent blog post , the organization has procedures to assist taxpayers in one of five scenarios. If you are dealing with one of the five issues below, Taxpayer Advocate Service can take your case (free!) On August 10th.

Scenario # 1

You used the Non-Filer Tool and requested one or more eligible children, but you never got their incentive money. The IRS will make these additional payments in the coming weeks.

Scenario # 2

You completed Form 8379 for Injured Spouse Benefit and did not receive your money. The IRS will also send this money soon.

Scenario # 3

You are eligible to receive a 2018 or 2019 tax return in which the IRS adjusted your tax return for a mathematical error – such as your filing status or adjusted gross income – and this affected the amount of your payment. The IRS can help you correct a math error and pay a stimulus payment if you are still eligible.

Scenario # 4

You have been a victim of identity theft and either did not receive your incentive check or the amount of your payment was incorrect. Once your identity theft issue is resolved, the IRS will send the missing payment.

Scenario # 5

You did not receive your incentive payment because you filed a joint tax return with your deceased or imprisoned spouse (neither eligible) and your payment was affected. The IRS will recalculate and send your payment.

What to expect

The IRS will be posting direct deposits and checks over the next few weeks. If you have already received some of your money, you can expect to receive the rest in the same way. The exception is debit cards, which the agency replaces with paper checks. You can apply for one of the five scenarios described above starting August 10 by contacting yourlocal Taxpayer Advocacy Office .
