Eat Your Crackers Upside Down

I consider myself to be something of a “considerate eater.” For example: when I eat Doritos, I always check each side of the chip to make sure the more flavored side is facing down towards my tongue. This results in a more flavorful and satisfying eating of the dorito. The same principle applies to crackers.

If you look at a box of crackers, you are almost always offered some sort of “serving suggestion.” The cracker is usually “enlarged to show texture,” and the “top” of the cracker is facing the palate, usually with a slice of cheddar, a spoonful of peanut butter, or a dab of goat cheese with half a vineyard on top. top. Looks good, but tastes good? This is just crazy.

The top of the cracker is the more textured and flavorful side, and when covered with a slice of cheese or some kind of spread, so to speak, the light is hidden under the bushel. Whether your cracker is seasoned with dehydrated cheese powder, chicken flavor , pepper, monosodium glutamate, or a simple sprinkle of salt, these condiments should point down towards your tongue for you to taste them fully.

You will also get many textural benefits if you consume your crackers this way. Take the humble Club Cracker, for example. Its top is oily, salty and slightly bubbling from baked goods. These raised pieces of the cracker give way when you press lightly (with your mouth), revealing the flaky layers beneath. This is what you want next to your tongue, not a flat, raw butt. Plus, putting the filling on the flat side of the cracker means it lies flat – it really is the best configuration.

Obviously, this does not apply to crackers with no visible top or bottom. Briquettes and the like are nearly identical on both sides, so there is no reason to worry about the side you put the filling on. But for crackers containing this duality, place the filling on the bottom and let the top touch your tongue. You will experience more flavor, more textural contrast, and the satisfaction that comes from being a more considerate and thoughtful eater.
