Embrace Evil by Enabling Dark Mode in Every App

If you like looking at bright white backgrounds on different operating systems, this article is not for you. I personally cannot bear it. I look at enough screens throughout the day, and switching to dark mode is an almost indescribable relief for my eyes. Plus it’s super gothic . Here’s how to set up Dark Mode – the official Evil Week mode – across all of your apps.

How to enable Dark Mode in Windows 10

When you’re ready to go to the dark side, open Windows 10 Settings and click Personalize. From there click on Colors in the left sidebar. Find the “Choose your color” drop-down menu on the right side of the window and switch from light to dark.

How to enable Dark Mode in macOS Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur

It’s easy. Open System Preferences in macOS Mojave (or later), click General, and choose Light , Dark, or Auto to change the look of your operating system. (The third option switches between the two modes depending on the time of day.)

Of course, if you are impatient or want to manually control your appearance without having to constantly visit system settings , you can also create a keyboard shortcut that allows you to instantly switch between them.

How to enable Dark Mode on Android 9 or later

Make sure you are using at least Android 9 (Pie). Open the Settings app, then:

Click on Display and you should see an option for Dark Theme, Night Mode, or something like that. If you don’t, click on the Advanced section and you will no doubt find it there.

It’s also very easy to add a shortcut to the quick settings menu, which you can then use to switch between the phone’s dark and light modes as needed.

How to enable Dark Mode on iOS / iPadOS 13 or later

Assuming you are using at least iOS 13 or iPadOS 13, turning on your device’s dark mode is very simple:

Tap Settings > Display & Brightness , and then choose Light or Dark.

If you want to get creative, you can also use the Automatic setting to switch your device from a light theme to a dark theme at sunrise or sunset (or whichever custom schedule you prefer). And if you find that some of your favorite apps don’t have a dark mode for them to use, you can also force it . “

How to enable Dark Mode in Chrome OS

Good news: Chrome OS has a dark mode. Bad news: you need to run Canary (experimental) version of the operating system in order to access it. This can lead to system instability, unexpected errors, or no idea what is happening on your Chromebook. That said, if you want darkness, here’s how you get it:

  • Open your Chromebook Preferences and click About Chrome OS.
  • Click Build Details.
  • Change Channel to Developer and confirm your decision.
  • Click the Restart button on the About Chrome OS page.
  • After restarting your Chromebook, start Chrome, enter these two flags in your browser address bar and enable them: chrome: // flags / # enable-force-dark and chrome: // flags / # enable-webui-dark-mode.

How to turn on “Dark Mode” in the Chrome browser on a computer

Chrome should follow your system’s default settings, so if you’ve configured dark mode on your operating system, you’ll have dark mode on Chrome. To change the look of Chrome manually, you need to:

  • Pull up your Chrome settings by
  • Click ” Appearance”.
  • Change the “default theme” to ” Dark”.

You can also enforce dark theme for web content:

It’s not great, but it gets the job done if you despise when flamboyant websites surprise you. (Rhymes inadvertently.) To enable forced dark mode, simply type chrome: // flags / # enable-force-dark in the address bar, press Enter and enable this feature.

How to enable “Dark Mode” in the Edge Chromium desktop browser

The second verse is the same as the first; Edge Chromium should also follow your system’s default settings. If not, or you want to mix a dark browser with a light operating system user interface, simply:

  • Pull up Chrome’s Edge system settings
  • Click ” Appearance”.
  • Change the “default theme” to “Dark”.

The same “forced dark theme” trick in Chrome works in Edge Chromium as well.

How to enable Dark Mode in Firefox desktop browser

Like Google Chrome and Edge Chromium, Firefox must respect your system settings for light or dark theme. To adjust this:

  • Open the Firefox Add-ons menu.
  • Click on Topics
  • Switch from Default to Dark or Light.

How to enable Dark Mode on Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / YouTube / WhatsApp / Google Docs / Slack / Discord / Twitch

I know this is a pretty long list. There are many services out there that have their own dark modes on the web or perhaps in their applications. I’ll focus on the former whenever possible, as chances are good that any decently coded app will simply follow your Android or iOS theme of choice. But the website needs to be persuaded a bit:

Twitter (Internet)

Just go here and choose Dim or Dim .

Instagram (app)

Instagram follows your preferences on Android or iOS; If you’re unfamiliar with your operating system, you’ll be dark on Instagram too. There is no web-based dark mode (yet), but I believe it will one day be.

Facebook (Internet)

In the latest version of Facebook user interface, simply click the down arrow in the upper right corner. Click Display Options and turn on Dark Mode.

YouTube (Internet)

Click on your face in the upper right corner, click on Appearance and select Dark Theme.

WhatsApp (Internet)

Sign in to WhatsApp on the web, then:

“… click the three-dot icon above the message list and select Settings . Tap on a theme and then switch it to dark. Now you will have a much nicer interface to work with. “

Google Docs (app)

There is no dark web mode (yet), but there is one for various Google productivity apps (Docs, Sheets, and Slides) on iOS and Android. To activate it if it is not already enabled on your device by default:

  • Open the settings menu in each app.
  • Click on Choose a theme or theme
  • Click on “Dark”

Slack (desktop application)

Use the dark side by harassing coworkers. To activate Slack’s dark mode if it doesn’t already match your operating system’s settings, simply:

  • Launch Slack Settings (shortcut: CTRL + comma )
  • Click on Topics
  • Click “Dark”.

Discord (desktop app)

Connect with all your gamer friends – or whatever else you do on Discord – without blinding yourself with light. To activate dark mode:

  • Click on the gear icon in the bottom left corner to open Discord settings.
  • Click ” Appearance”.
  • Choose “Dark” for the Discord theme.

Twitch (site)

It couldn’t be easier: just log into Twitch, click your profile picture in the upper right corner and turn on the Dark Theme slider.
