How to Stream Xbox Games to Your IPhone or IPad

Microsoft may be struggling to get its cloud streaming service on iOS devices , but at least you can now play Xbox One games remotely on your iPhone or iPad. All you need to do this is the latest version of the Xbox app. While cloud streaming is a cooler idea, this new remote streaming feature provides a free way to play Xbox One (and soon Xbox Series X) games on the go.

However, updating the Xbox app is only one piece of the remote streaming puzzle. There are several hardware limitations and requirements that you need to be aware of as well.

Stream games from Xbox One (and Xbox Series X) to iOS / iPadOS

Any Xbox games you want to stream will need to be installed locally on your Xbox One or inserted into your drive. Again, this feature is for streaming your games over Wi-Fi or mobile data; it is not cloud streaming.

The Xbox app streaming feature only supports Xbox One games, which means you won’t be able to play Xbox 360 or original Xbox games even if they’re installed on your Xbox One console. Likewise, you will not be able to play PC Game Pass games installed on your computer. However, the Xbox app remote play will support the upcoming Xbox Series X and Series S on the first day.

To play over Wi-Fi, your console must be connected to the same network as the iPhone or iPad you’re streaming to. (Microsoft recommends using your 5GHz network for the fastest connection possible.) To play mobile data, you need a strong LTE or 5G connection with at least 10MB download speed if you’re playing outside the home.

Finally, you’ll need an Xbox One wireless controller synced to your Apple device, and a controller mount that you can insert your iPhone into will also be helpful.

If you meet these requirements, you are ready to start streaming in your application, for example:

  1. Open the Xbox app.
  2. Go to the “My Library” tab.
  3. Select Consoles.
  4. Click Connect under the console you want to stream from, or click Configure Console if you haven’t already.
  5. A short animation plays and then the Xbox home screen is displayed on your iPhone / iPad.
  6. Use your controller to select the game you want to play, launch it and enjoy!
