We Are Still Not Allowed to Cross the Border Into Canada, so Don’t Try
For a short period, it looked like travelers from the United States would be able to visit Canada for the first time in months, starting October 21, 2020. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau then made a few remarks during a radio show earlier this week that seemed to indicate that this will no longer be the case. Here’s what you need to know about current travel restrictions.
Cancel your travel plans to Canada
Back on September 18, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair announced that the country’s restrictions on non-essential travel from the United States would be extended until October 21.
Blair also mentioned that the government will continue to make travel decisions based on what’s best for the country’s public health, leaving open the possibility of another extension of travel restrictions. Judging by Trudeau’s appearance on Global News Radio’s “The Start” radio show, they don’t look like they’ll be canceled anytime soon.
“We are continuing to extend border closures because the United States is not in a place where we would feel comfortable opening those borders,” Trudeau told show co-host Lauren McNabb. “We will continue to ensure that the safety of Canadians is the focus as we move forward.”
It doesn’t seem like things are going better here
And the fact that in the US the number of daily cases of the disease has increased by more than 55% in just a month does not help. “I know a lot of people are very concerned about what is happening south of the border, Florida, Arizona, California, other places where the virus is not under control, much less under control than we are here,” said Trudeau. in an interview. In addition, some of the states with the highest data rates at the moment – such as North Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, and Alaska – border Canada.
It is unclear at this point when the borders will reopen, but to do this, Trudeau said, the United States must act together. “The US is not in a place where we would be comfortable opening these borders,” Trudeau said in an interview. “We will continue to ensure that safety in Canada is the focus as we move forward. We see cases in the United States and elsewhere in the world, and we need to continue to maintain these border controls. ”
