Store Stamps in an Envelope Box
The last time I checked that I have a very good creditworthiness, this fact has little to do with financial responsibility and has a lot to do with automatic payment of bills over the Internet. Every time I get a bill that I can’t bill and forget — like my rent for my last apartment — I don’t pay it on time almost every month. And even when I remember I need to drop a check in the mail, I can’t find the stamp and wind to go to the post office, not what I want to do during a pandemic. But former Lifehacker employee Nick Douglas recently told us about his personal hack to do this: He suggests storing stamps in the box your envelopes came in. This way you will always know where they are and they will be at hand when you most likely need them.
Now that I don’t go to the office every day, this is a great addition to my own stamps trick, which was to keep one or two of them in my wallet in case I need to mail something to work. Yes, many offices have post offices where you can buy stamps, but every office I’ve ever worked in required you to pay for postage with a personal check, not cash, and who carries checks in 2020? I don’t even remember the last time I used a check for anything other than confirming my routing number. (Still, Lifehacker parenting editor Megan Walbert suggests an extra trick – keep one check in your wallet – but you probably don’t want to write a 55-cent check to buy one stamp.) And now that you can be confident that you can always find a stamp, it’s time to start sending handwritten personal letters to all the people you can’t visit in person right now. Future historians documenting the collapse of society will be grateful to you.
