Use This Website to Find Out What Software Works on Mac M1 Computers
Apple’s move from Intel processors to using its own M1 chip in its Macs and MacBooks means iOS apps can now run directly on macOS. Unfortunately, this also means that some desktop applications designed for Intel hardware are no longer compatible with the new Mac M1 computers.
While many popular Mac applications are natively supported, others require a program called Rosetta 2. Rosetta 2 is an emulator – in fact, it uses software that simulates Intel hardware, so you can run Intel-only applications on your Mac even if they are not. natively supported. The Spotify desktop app is one example.
However, there are a significant portion of applications that do not work on Mac M1 computers and do not have Rosetta 2 support, such as the popular music production software Pro Tools. Moreover, some applications run on Mac – either natively or via Rosetta 2 – but have bugs and performance issues. Many Adobe Creative Suite applications such as InDesign and Illustrator fall into this category.
To help users find out what software their new Mac M1 can run, programmer Abdullah Diaa has created a user-friendly website called Is Apple Silicon Ready? ”, Which shows exactly which applications run on Mac M1 computers. You can use the search bar at the top of the page to find a specific application, or browse the entire list page by page.
There are filters to only show apps with “native M1 support”, “Rosetta 2 only” or “not working”, and you can narrow the list down to specific categories like video production, performance, photography, etc.
The icons in the table show if the app is supported (natively or with Rosetta 2):
- A green check mark means it is working fine.
- A yellow exclamation mark means the application is working, but with some errors.
- A red forbidding symbol means that the application is incompatible.
The table also indicates which M1 firmware version is required to run the application. You can click an app to see more details about its performance and whether M1 support is planned for programs that are not yet compatible.
If you do not see the required application in the list, or you are a developer and want to add your software to the site or change the specified support, click “Request Application ” and fill out the submission form.
